Paediatric care, from one parent
to another.

I graduated in Medicine from the University of Birmingham in 1996, achieving distinctions and honours across multiple subjects, and I also hold an honours degree in Pharmacology. I am a Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) and hold additional qualifications in medical education (PCME) and research (MD).

• I am a Consultant Paediatrician with a specialist interest in Paediatric Allergy and Infectious Disease at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals.
• I developed and now lead the Paediatric Allergy Service, which is one of the most comprehensive services in the region. Under my leadership, the service now cares for around 3,000 children and young people with allergies each year.
• I have been accredited as a European Paediatric Allergist by the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI).
• Joint author of the national BSACI Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy guideline.

• I established a Paediatric Infectious Disease clinic for children with unusual or recurrent infections, as well as those with increased susceptibility to infection.
• I also run general paediatric clinics, seeing children with a wide range of medical concerns, and regularly care for acutely unwell children on the ward.
• I contributed to the national UK guidelines on the management of Encephalitis.
• I was involved in the longest successful resuscitation of a child in the UK — BBC article, Telegraph article.

• I am the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals, responsible for patient safety, patient experience, and the quality of patient care, ensuring we are working to current guidelines for conditions. I am also responsible for the safety and well-being of the staff under my care.
• After completing the NHS Leadership Academy Nye Bevan programme, I became Group Director for Women and Child Health, helping to shape pathways of care to ensure high-quality, safe and effective services for women, children and young people.
• I have previously chaired the Midlands Paediatric Allergy Group, working to improve standards of care and education for healthcare professionals across the region.
• I was chair of the Paediatric Allergy Committee of BSACI from 2021 to 2024, where I worked to improve access to high-quality allergy care for children across the UK.
• Nominated for Quality of Care Award 2018 (SWB).
• Nominated for Children’s Team of the Year Award 2019 (SWB).
• Highly Commended in the Hospital Staff Awards for ‘Excellence in Customer Care’.
• Won the Hospital We Learn Poster prize for best quality improvement project, improving the aspirations of young pupils in schools in deprived areas.

• I am an Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Course Director, approved by the Advanced Life Support Group, and I set up the APLS course at my hospital to train doctors in the recognition and emergency management of life-threatening paediatric emergencies.
• I am the Lead for Paediatrics for the University of Birmingham medical degree, with responsibility for the training and assessment of medical students in recognition of sick children and how to implement emergency treatment to improve outcomes.
• Previously, I was the Training Programme Director for Paediatrics in the West Midlands, responsible for the education of approximately 120 junior paediatric doctors across the region.
• I currently teach at local, regional, national and international levels, and I have been awarded an Honorary Professorship at the University of Birmingham in recognition of my commitment to education and service development.

Ok, this is one area where I can’t claim to be an expert. But anyone who knows me will know that I often get involved with charity events – and that usually involves busting some moves on a makeshift dance floor. I even won the Fundraiser of the Year award in 2020 and raised over £7,000 for charity by dancing for 12 hours straight!  Take a look at my social media, or the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust Facebook page, and you might catch me dancing.
