A young girl joyfully eats a salad, holding a fork with a tomato slice. A glass of orange juice and green apples are on the table. Bright and cheerful scene.

Understanding food allergies in children

Understanding your child’s food allergy is essential to keeping them safe and healthy. Food allergies are not just about avoiding certain foods; it is important to recognise the underlying causes, understand how and why reactions occur, spot symptoms early, and know how to prevent accidental exposure.

90% of allergic reactions come from nine food allergens – milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, crustacean shellfish, wheat, soy, and sesame – known as “the big 9”. Identification of allergens and daily management is key.

Understanding your child’s food allergy is the foundation for helping them live a happy, full, and active life. Food allergies are about more than simply avoiding certain foods, they’re about understanding how reactions happen, recognising early signs and symptoms, and putting practical strategies in place to keep your child safe in everyday situations.

Symptoms of a food allergy include

Food allergy symptoms can vary from mild to more serious, depending on your child and the food involved. Common symptoms may include:

  1. A scratchy, tingling sensation in the mouth and throat
  2. Swelling of lips, eyes or face
  3. Hives, flushed face or red, itchy rash
  4. Tummy pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  5. Blocked nose, coughing, wheezing or sneezing

I can’t thank Dr. Nick Makwana enough for the incredible care he provided when I was diagnosed with a nut allergy at the age of 10. From the very first visit, he made me feel completely comfortable and understood, taking the time to explain everything in a way that was easy for me to grasp.
